Have you ever wondered how to start a conversation with someone you suspect is lonely? Short conversations can help reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety.

This is the basis for new programs being designed to mitigate the isolating effects of the pandemic. English towns are installing ‘chat benches’, intergenerational video-conferencing services are available, and some supermarkets have “chat registers” for customers who want to experience a connection while purchasing groceries.

How can we integrate this strategy into our everyday worlds?

What would you talk about? Consider this simple strategy: Harness the power of food and introduce the topic of eating. Ask someone for suggestions on what to make for dinner or ask if they have a favorite recipe for the chicken sitting in your fridge. Let’s start talking about food.
